Discusses the effectiveness of close reading for teaching “Cross Country Snow” in his interdisciplinary environmental education program where students fuse their own backcountry skiing experience with Hemingway’s. Knickerbocker explores the vital role close textual analysis plays in fostering the sense of natural place through thoughtful contemplation and careful observation of the environment. Concludes that such attention is necessary for addressing our current environmental crises.
