Hemingway’s Code: The Spanish Civil War and World Power
Document Type
Book Chapter
Annotation
Examines the moral dimensions of Hemingway’s code found in For Whom the Bell Tolls considering the author’s politics and the political ideals of the Spanish Civil War. Argues that the novel balances Hemingway’s loyalty to the Republican cause with his growing disillusionment and feelings of betrayal due largely to Russia’s treacherous involvement. Also discusses briefly “The Denunciation,” “The Butterfly and the Tank,” and “Under the Ridge.”
