Citation

Fleming, Robert E. “The Hills Remain: The Mountain West of Hemingway’s Islands Manuscript.” North Dakota Quarterly 58, no. 3 (1990): 79-85.

Annotation

Manuscript study noting that Hemingway’s original draft of Islands in the Stream portrayed the American west in a positive light, as a place for renewal and creative growth. Because Hemingway deleted this early section from the posthumously published novel, most readers know only Hemingway’s negative depiction of the west found in stories such as “The Gambler, the Nun, and the Radio,” and “A Man of the World.”
