Annotation
Overview of the elephant image found in contemporary psychology, literature, and ancient animal lore. Hillman sees in Kotzwinkle’s Elephant Bangs Train (1971), Orwell’s “Shooting an Elephant,” and the African story a connection between the dying elephant and the act of writing. Hillman writes, “The elephant hunt and the author’s reflections on the writing of it become a parable for the mystical integrity of writing itself which is the soul of the book.”
