Postmodernist analysis of For Whom the Bell Tolls arguing against reading the novel as either fact or fiction. Focusing on structural difference, Van Gunten examines character response to several binary oppositions, including truth/lies and religion/politics. Argues that Hemingway’s subversion of these narrative oppositions reveals his belief that writers have a duty to both truth and art.
