Argues Pilar’s vivid, honest stories are intended to educate Robert Jordan on his past and future and integrate him into the Spanish villagers’ culture and history, while creating a more dramatic, dynamic adventure for readers and characters alike. Compares Hemingway’s storytellers to those found in B. Traven’s adventure novel. Cole asserts all exist in “dream-like settings” with “mythological overtones” to warn against gluttony and fear and to encourage living beyond the ordinary.
