Compares Stegner’s two early short story collections, The Women on the Wall (1950) and The City of the Living and 7 Other Stories (1956), to In Our Time. Examines similarities between Stegner’s Bruce Mason and Hemingway’s Nick Adams, commenting on each author’s treatment of the father-son relationship and use of modernist techniques such as disjunctive story arrangement. Flora also discusses ways in which the short story featured in each author’s career.
