The Unrising Sun: The Theme of Castration in Hemingway and Sterne
Comparison study. Draws parallels between Lawrence Sterne’s Uncle Toby of Tristam Shandy (1759) and Hemingway’s Jake Barnes of The Sun Also Rises. Notes that their war wounds protect them from the destruction of disastrous relationships with women, thus making the endings more happy than sad. Speculates that both characters reflect Hemingway’s and Sterne’s misogyny.
