Annotation

Criticizes Hemingway’s treatment of African American characters in his texts, most specifically the silencing of Wesley from To Have and Have Not. Sees Hemingway’s discrimination against the “nameless, sexless, nationless Africanist presence” as a narrative strategy to establish and confirm the superiority of the novel’s white characters, namely Harry and Marie.
