Prasad, Murari. “The Sea as Symbol in Moby Dick, Lord Jim and The Old Man and the Sea.” Indian Journal of American Studies 22, no. 2 (1992): 89-95.

Annotation

Compares the common sea symbol found in the three novels, examining how each protagonist must face differing existential challenges set against the limitless and inscrutable backdrop of the sea. Concludes that the sea in Hemingway’s novella “becomes the operative alternative reality on which man can impose order, exercise his will, and attain selfhood through his exertion and strenuous work.”
