Ideological Form, Symbolic Exchange, Textual Production: A Symptomatic Reading of For Whom the Bell Tolls

Annotation
Drawing heavily on the theories of Bakhtin and others, San Juan focuses on the ideological form of For Whom the Bell Tolls as one built on contradictory elements. Examines how the textual language in the scenes of the destruction of El Sordo’s band, Pilar’s story of the insurrection in Pablo’s town, and Maria’s violation each contribute to the novel’s formation and critique of ideology.
