Schmigalle, Gunther. “Seven Ambiguities in Ernest Hemingway’s For Whom the Bell Tolls.” Special Issue, North Dakota Quarterly 60, no. 2 (Spring 1992): 72-82.

Annotation

Close reading identifying contradictory elements such as communist and anticommunist sympathies, revolutionary and popular front politics, courage with cause and without, and heroes and victims. Concludes that while the novel’s faults make it inferior to Malraux’s L’Espoir (1937), it is an effective expression of Hemingway’s personality.
