Citation

Kozikowski, S., S. Adriaansen, D. Moruzzi, and C. Prokop. “Hemingway’s ‘The Short Happy Life of Francis Macomber.’” Explicator 51, no. 4 (1993): 239-41.

Annotation

Interprets the story as a biblical allegory of Paradise Lost, reading the Macombers as a “prelapsarian Adam and Eve, created but living uncomfortably in androgyny, becoming individuated sexually after their fall, which brings destruction and death.” Points out other similar androgynous couplings in Hemingway’s canon, beginning with The Sun Also Rises and ending with The Garden of Eden.
