Autobiography and Anesthesia: Ernest Hemingway, Storm Jameson, and Me

Annotation
Examines the relationship between pain and anesthesia in A Farewell to Arms, Storm Jameson’s None Turn Back (1936), and in Cunningham’s own experience. Cunningham argues that Catherine, who breaks Hemingway’s code of honor, is a victim of “gendered” suffering where worth is measured by stoicism and repression. Exposes Catherine’s death as a possible result of the dangerously high doses of anesthesia administered by Frederic.
