"The Undefeated" and Sangre y Arena: Hemingway’s Mano a Mano with Blasco Ibánez

Document Type

Book Chapter

Annotation

Reads the story as Hemingway’s attempt to “outdo” Spain’s greatest tauromachic novel, Sangre y Arena (1909), and its author, Blasco Ibánez. Beegel examines the many similarities between the protagonists of the two works and Hemingway’s reliance on borrowed plot structures in “The Undefeated” and other tauromachic works such as In Our Time and The Sun Also Rises. Frequent references to Death in the Afternoon.
