Annotation

Examines the tenants of modernist nativism in The Torrents of Spring, The Sun Also Rises, “Indian Camp,” and “Mr. and Mrs. Elliot.” Focusing on anxieties of reproduction, incest, and sterility, Michaels argues that Hemingway identifies impotency with racial or cultural purity and thus honors the passing of the “great race.”
