Document Type

Annotation
Criticizes filmmakers Frank Borzage and David O. Selznick for minimizing Hemingway’s poignant depictions of war in their 1932 and 1957 adaptations of A Farewell to Arms. Praises For Whom the Bell Tolls director Sam Wood for “coloring some of the scenes with a human touch,” but ultimately finds his 1943 adaptation lacking the force of Hemingway’s disciplined, evocative prose.
