Annotation

On Carlos Baker’s seminal biography, Ernest Hemingway: A Life Story (1969), suggesting the biographer was limited by both his medium and audience, which restricted his latitude to create meaningful commentary. Kimbrel reexamines Baker’s staid, factual approach, interpreting his account as a nuanced, sub-textual guide into Hemingway’s life, with the intention of exploring the binaries of Hemingway’s personalities. Concludes that Baker’s biography suffers from his acquiescence to the caricatures and mythos of Hemingway the icon, not the writer.
