Annotation

Posits that in the novella “baseball serves not only as a metaphorical or allegorical underpinning, but as a structural element as well.” Contends that the numerous references create a pattern “which suggests player at-bats during a crucial game.” Plath asserts that though Santiago succeeds in the first two instances with the marlin and mako, in his third time at bat he strikes out against the sharks. Plath explicates the cultural and historical context of many of the baseball allusions.
