Citation

Whittier, Gayle. “Clinical Gaze and the Erotic Body in A Farewell to Arms.” Studies in the Humanities 23, no. 1 (June 1996): 1-27.

Annotation

Drawing on the theories of Michel Foucault, Whittier traces the opposing clinical and erotic viewpoints throughout Frederic and Catherine’s relationship. Explores how the medical gaze of the hospital detaches and dehumanize the body, despite Frederic and Catherine’s attempt to maintain eroticism through their sexual interaction. Concludes that through Henry’s eroticized narration of their tale, the novel “ultimately celebrates Eros despite the clinical execution of romantic love.”
