Gender study investigating Jake Barnes’s struggle to psychically integrate his masculine consciousness concerned with work and individuality with his feminine need to foster relationships and provide care. Examines the nature of Jake’s relationships with Mike Campbell and Robert Cohn, concluding that by novel’s end Jake has come to accept his feminine self though he longs for the world of the masculine.
