Biographical approach interpreting Nick’s relationship with his father in the Nick Adams stories in light of Hemingway’s troubled relationship with his own father. Attributes Nick’s attitudinal shift from affection to resentment toward his father to Dr. Hemingway’s 1928 suicide, concluding that Hemingway’s fear of inheriting his father’s mental illness and cowardice manifested itself in his writing, including “Fathers and Sons,” Green Hills of Africa, and For Whom the Bell Tolls.
