Annotation
Study of Irvin’s 2010 film adaptation foregrounding the war-traumatized David’s reaching within himself for the masculine strength necessary to withstand the equally traumatized Catherine’s attacks on his masculinity as she seeks fulfillment through control of his creative achievements. Ledden examines the film act by act, discussing the couple’s identity and sexual experimentations, relationship with Marita, Marita’s role in fostering David’s inner strength, and the significance of the Africa narrative in preserving David’s masculine, patriarchal identity.
