Claims we can better understand Hemingway and his time by examining the use of Indians in his works, particularly Nick Adams stories. Asserts that Hemingway utilizes primitivism, both cultural and chronological, in his writing to highlight inauthentic Western civilization against the authenticity of Indian culture. Works analyzed include “Indian Camp,” “The Light of the World,” “Fathers and Sons,” “The Doctor and the Doctor’s Wife,” “Ten Indians,” and The Torrents of Spring.
