Citation

Harrow, Kenneth W. “Gordimer contre Hemingway: Crossing Back through the Mirror that Subtends All Speculation.” In (Un)Writing Empire, edited by Theo D’haen, 187-202. Amsterdam, Netherlands: Rodopi, 1998.

Annotation

Compares “The Short Happy Life of Francis Macomber” to Gordimer’s “A Hunting Accident,” noting striking parallels in plot that suggest Gordimer’s story is a feminist response to Hemingway’s tale of domination and dependency. Gives a Lacanian reading of “Macomber,” focusing especially on Macomber’s transformation considering the Oedipal complex. Harrow relies on the theories of Irigaray and Cixous in reading Gordimer’s revision of Hemingway.
