Annotation
Includes stylistic analysis of The Sun Also Rises and “The Undefeated,” contending that Hemingway was greatly influenced by paratactical constructions found in the Bible. Also addresses the similar use of parataxis found in Marilynne Robinson’s Gilead (2004) and Cormac McCarthy’s The Road (2006), concluding that “something of the old dynamic stubbornly persists” as writers continue to draw on the rich stylistic resources of the Bible despite our everchanging culture.
