Hemingway and the Peninsular War
Document Type

Annotation
Claims that in writing For Whom the Bell Tolls, Hemingway drew on not only his own reporting in Spain but also on his reading about the peninsular war in which guerrillas drove Napoleon’s army from Spain in the early nineteenth century. Draws several parallels between the use of guerrillas in both wars and Hemingway’s depiction of the Spanish fighters.
