Jolliff, William. “Redeeming the Serpentine Subtext: Dennis Covington’s Appropriation of Hemingway’s The Sun Also Rises in Salvation on Sand Mountain.” Hemingway Review 30, no. 2 (Spring 2011): 73-87.

Annotation

Compares Hemingway’s novel with Covington’s nonfiction book based on the author’s spiritual renewal among Pentecostal snake handlers in the Appalachians. Jolliff argues that Hemingway’s novel serves as an unconscious subtext for Salvation on Sand Mountain (1995) and discusses similarities in character, plot, and theme. Addresses each narrator’s penchant for alcohol and danger and search for religious meaning in a chaotic, fragmented world.
