Citation

Peat, Alexandra. “Wandering Pilgrimage: Mobile Expatriatism in Ernest Hemingway’s The Sun Also Rises, F. Scott Fitzgerald’s Tender is the Night and Claude McKay’s Banjo.” In Travel and Modernist Literature: Sacred and Ethical Journeys, 96-130. New York: Routledge, 2011.

Annotation

Comparison study of the spiritual ethics of the wandering pilgrim found in all three novels. Contesting Hemingway’s definition of The Sun Also Rises as tragedy, Peat positively characterizes the expatriate journey as an opportunity for the spiritual seeker to escape his deadening confines and gain a fresh perspective on the world.
