Annotation

Comparison of the treatment of sexuality and martyrdom in The Sun Also Rises to Faulkner’s The Sound and the Fury (1929). Asserts that Brett’s sexual sins are redeemed through the love and actions of Jake Barnes, a Christlike figure whose impotence both reflects and symbolizes his sacrifice for Brett. Suggests that Jake selflessly replaces his own need for a romantic relationship with Brett with a sincere desire to be a source of strength to those he loves.
