Draws on the theory behind Woodrow Wilson’s rhetorical leadership, as well as an analysis of thought, action, and leadership in the novel, to argue that Hemingway’s minimalist style directly responds to Wilson’s verbose rhetoric surrounding World War I. Shows how Hemingway’s reporting for the Toronto Star and the structure of In Our Time criticize Wilson’s “idealistic belief in mediation,” and argues that the language of the novel exhorts leaders to achieve peace by remaining balanced yet active amid political strife.
