Annotation
Comparison study of the treatment of war-related impotence in Hemingway’s and Bobbie Ann Mason’s postwar novels, identifying both writers as operating within and challenging contemporaneous medical discourse on erectile dysfunction. Klaver reads Jake’s wound within the dominant psychological discourse on impotence at the time, suggesting that Hemingway may have been drawing attention to the inadequacy of treatment for those men suffering from physical injury.
