Shakespeare, Alex. “Reading Hemingway’s Baudelaire.” Literary Imagination 14, no. 2 (2012): 237-44.

Annotation

Highlights the significant presence of French poet Charles Baudelaire in Hemingway’s canon. Discusses in particular “A Room on the Garden Side,” which includes untranslated poems from Baudelaire’s Fleur du mal (1857). Shakespeare explains their similar use of “redemptive prose” as each author’s way of coming to terms with his vices and laments the lack of critical attention given to Baudelaire’s influence on Hemingway.
