Annotation
Proposes the calamity of the novel to be the love between the protagonists, arguing that A Farewell to Arms is a critique of both Frederic and his self-indulgent and irresponsible relationship with Catherine. In his close reading, Cain separates Frederic’s first-person narrative voice from that of Hemingway to reassert Hemingway’s self-aware and psychologically astute writing style in opposition to critics who have underestimated the complexity of his thinking.
