Contends, despite criticism to the contrary, that the unnamed protagonist of “A Very Short Story” is Nick Adams. Daiker makes his case by explaining the structure of In Our Time, linking language, time, and place in the story to its preceding vignette on Nick Adams. Concludes that biographical similarities show the protagonist is a surrogate Hemingway and therefore the real Nick Adams.
