Compares In Our Time to Steinbeck’s Cannery Row (1945) arguing that writing about the natural world enabled both authors to break from the traditional narrative conventions of resolution and progress in their short story cycles about the meaning of war and the subsequent search for solace. Smith contends that such resistance to conclusion reflects their rejection of the finality of life and allows them to contemplate the ritual of writing without end.
