Ragsdell-Hetrick, Danell. “Catherine, the Baby and the Gas: The Fatal Effects of Twilight Sleep in A Farewell to Arms.” Arkansas Review 45, no. 2 (Aug. 2014): 115-19.

Annotation

Quasi-medical analysis arguing Catherine and her baby died from an overdose of anesthesia as evidenced by her physical symptoms and altered cognitive state and by the baby’s discoloration and lack of movement. Suggests Frederic caused Catherine’s death by twice increasing her dosage and proposes his actions serve as Hemingway’s modernist warning against progressive medical practices.
