Historical/biographical approach to Woolf’s New York Herald Tribune’s unfavorable review of Men Without Women and its likely influence on each author’s developing literary aesthetic articulated in Death in the Afternoon and Woolf’s A Room of One’s Own (1929). Tyler reveals Woolf’s uneasiness in her role as critic and Hemingway’s frustration with her review evident in his correspondence with Maxwell Perkins and later jabs at her in Green Hills of Africa and Across the River and into the Trees.
