Reading the novel’s treatment of trauma through the lens of Nietzsche’s The Birth of Tragedy 1872), Dandeles links the Dionysian chaos of the fiesta at Pamplona to the realities of World War I. Argues that to endure the emptiness of postwar society, traumatized survivors like Jake must shift their values away from the abstract and facile order of prewar Apollonian society to establish a new system of simplified, tangible, and shallow values.
