Title
Becoming with Animals: Sympoiesis and the Ecology of Meaning in London and Hemingway
Document Type
Article
Annotation
Exploration of the interwoven nature of human and animal lives, arguing that not only are characters dependent on animals in various ways but that the authors themselves rely on blurred human-animal boundaries to create meaning that readers understand. Hediger examines intertwining narratives of trauma experienced across species in “The Short Happy Life of Francis Macomber” and Green Hills of Africa to show how Hemingway undermines masculinist dominance in favor of shared world reliance.
