Annotation

On Hemingway’s lifelong fascination with baseball and admiration for Joe DiMaggio with whom Hemingway identified and whose public image aligns with the Hemingway hero. Discusses both DiMaggio’s personal life and professional career, likening him to Santiago of The Old Man and the Sea and the young and energetic Mickey Mantle to Manolin. Comments on the significance of other baseball allusions in the novella, including Dick Sisler and John J. McGraw.
