Wickes, George. “What Hemingway Learned from Ford.” In Ford Madox Ford’s Cosmopolis: Psycho-geography, Flânerie and the Cultures of Paris (International Ford Madox Ford Studies 15), edited by Alexandra Becquet and Claire Davison, 189-206. Boston: Brill Rodopi, 2016.

Annotation

Biographical approach focused on Ford’s importance as a mentor during Hemingway’s literary apprenticeship in Paris. Wickes discusses parallels in theme and technique between Ford’s No More Parades (1925) and Hemingway’s later For Whom the Bell Tolls and addresses Ford’s continued support of Hemingway’s career despite Hemingway’s animosity. Closes with commentary on Hemingway’s “devastating” portrayal of Ford in A Moveable Feast: The Restored Edition.
