Document Type

Annotation
Examines Hemingway’s manipulation of narrative time in the novel, shifting from the duck shoot to the lengthy Venetian portion, so that his protagonist might extend his joy in experiencing life. Wyatt provides a close reading of the novel’s opening, as well as commentary on Hemingway’s revisions of the gondola scene and closing duck shoot chapters. Makes frequent comparisons to In Our Time and other earlier works, showing Hemingway’s deliberate movement away from the craft of omission to include expressed emotion, detailed scenes, and prolonged inner monologues.
