Annotation

Recounts Hemingway and Stein’s break through letters, essays, and manuscript fragments. Examines each author’s view of the relationship revealed in Hemingway’s A Moveable Feast and “The Autobiography of Alice B. Hemingway” and Stein’s Autobiography of Alice B. Toklas (1933). Curnutt discusses Hemingway’s claim that he ended the relationship to minimize Stein’s influence but concludes that Hemingway continued to be haunted by Stein as evidenced by his later references to her in his works.
