Hays, Peter L. “Tennessee Williams ‘Outs’ Scott and Ernest.” In The Author as Character: Representing Historical Writers in Western Literature, edited by Paul Franssen and Ton Hoenselaars, 253-63. Madison, NJ: Fairleigh Dickinson University Press, 1999.

Annotation

Close examination of the homosexual depiction of Hemingway and Fitzgerald in Williams’s Clothes for a Summer Hotel (1981), hypothesizing that Williams was attempting to form a bond with the two writers while bolstering his own career. Argues that Williams’s erroneous portrayal denies Hemingway’s insights as an author who investigated homosexual and polymorphous sexuality in his works.
