Azevedo, Milton M. “Shadows of a Literary Dialect: For Whom the Bell Tolls in Five Romance Languages.” Hemingway Review 20, no. 1 (Fall 2000): 30-48.

Annotation

Examines the methods by which Catalan, French, Italian, Portuguese, and Spanish translators deal with Hemingway’s manipulation of English and Spanish syntax and vocabulary to convey the effect of spoken Spanish. Azevedo comments on the difficulty of creating this “literary dialect,” and explains that it is almost impossible to replicate successfully through translation.
