Izquierdo, Isabel Garciá, and Borillo, Josep Marco. “The Degree of Grammatical Complexity in Literary Texts as a Translation Problem.” In Investigating Translation: Selected Papers from the 4th International Congress on Translation, edited by Allison Beeby, Doris Ensinger, and Marisa Presas, 65-74. Philadelphia: J. Benjamins, 2000.

Annotation

Compares Spanish and Catalan translations of passages from The Old Man and the Sea to show that in each version the translator preserves the same level of grammatical complexity as in the original. Notes that Hemingway’s stylistic simplicity reflects his central character’s simplicity, a correlation not lost upon his translators.
