Tilton, Margaret A. “Garnering an Opinion: A Double Look at Nick’s Surrogate Mother and Her Relationship to Dr. Adams in Hemingway’s ‘Ten Indians.’” Hemingway Review 20, no. 1 (Fall 2000): 79-89.

Annotation

Draws parallels between the characters of Mrs. Garner and Dr. Adams, arguing that, despite their differing personalities, both parents emasculate their sons. Tilton specifically examines each character’s attitudes toward sexuality, speculating that their views create a harmful dichotomy between themselves and their children, and thus impede their children’s transition to adulthood.
