Houk, Walter. “Lessons from Hemingway’s Cuban Biographer.” North Dakota Quarterly 68, nos. 2-3 (2001): 132-55.

Annotation

Takes issue with Norberto Fuentes’s Hemingway in Cuba (1984), correcting biographical fallacies, including the most likely source for Harry Morgan’s boat in To Have and Have Not, Thomas Hudson’s Q-boat route in Islands in the Stream, and the model for Santiago in The Old Man and the Sea. However, Houk’s main complaint is with the biographer’s tendency to read Hemingway’s Cuban fiction as real-life fact.
