Hemingway’s Iceberg Theory
Document Type
Article
Annotation
Analyzes successful and unsuccessful examples of Hemingway’s practice of omission in stories such as “Big Two-Hearted River” and “Hills Like White Elephants,” differentiating between the author’s theory and other conventional methods of omission. Suggests that Hemingway’s theory is only successful when the tip of the iceberg has been carefully carved.
